Natural Forms
The Art of Catherine Bezas
In her paintings as in her sculptures, Ms. Bezas' demonstrates equal skill in creating works that flow from her chosen medium. Using the Long Island and New England landscape as her inspiration, she lays down brushstrokes with a light, confident touch creating open and airy compositions that invite the viewer to experience her impression of these special places. Ms. Bezas' intimate relationship with water is sensitively portrayed in her depictions of turbulent sea, a tranquil marsh, or a harbor ensconced within golden dunes. Intrinsic to these works is the feeling of movement; an ocean breeze, Rolling waves, gently waving marsh grass and even the subtle change of light over the passage of time are communicated through spontaneous, energetic gestures and both naturalistic and exaggerated use of color. Rather than focus on details, which would would serve to ground the viewer in the present, Bezas', through her extemporaneous technique, has chosen to embrace both the transience and transcendence of nature.
Whether working in three-dimensional space or with the illusion of a two dimensional picture plane, Catherine Bezas' versatility allows her to communicate the sensuality of the world around her. Ms. Bezas' has shown her work throughout Long Island and has received awards for both her sculpture and her painting. She has studied various mediums with several prominent local and regional artists and is a longtime resident of Lloyd Harbor, N.Y. Bezas’ sculptures & paintings are in various private collections throughout New York City, Long Island & Greece.
